Outliers on Tour
In partnership with Myseum
March 8 – April 19
Outliers on Tour acknowledges the way narratives of history are inherently shaped as much by those from the outside as those inside. Embracing the term “Outlier” in every sense of the word, Chris Binkowski (Bucko), Michel Dumont, Eugene LeFrancois and Christine Negus with VibraFusion Lab work to bridge the porous and colonial peripheries of both the Toronto borders and parallel the ways in which artists from disability communities operate on the margins.
The term “Outlier” or “Outsider” has been used to describe artists working on the peripheries of the art world. Often categorized as a distinct aesthetic, the term ultimately reinforces social and cultural dichotomies of privilege, and implies an impervious divide that cannot be bridged. This exhibition complicates the established binaries by highlighting “crip” aesthetics of artists from outside the city — pushing back against disability’s historical representation as spectacle, and object of artistic inquiry. We re-imagine the dominant narratives by disrupting who tells the story.
The outliers are being invited in. The insiders are being invited out.
About the Artists:
“Outliers on Tour” features work from artists who engaged in the Tangled on Tour programming between 2015-2017. Chris Binkowski (Bucko), Michel Dumont, Eugene LeFrancois and Christine Negus with VibraFusion Lab. We would like to acknowledge the vital work that Cara Eastcott has done in forming these vital relationships.
