The Smiling Room What’s in a Queer smile? Joy, desire, anxiety, disdain, resistance, insight, trickery? We invite all members of Toronto’s LGBTQ2SIA Spectrum community to participate in an artful & intersectional dialogue about queer happiness.
Is there room to smile? Our queer archive is largely of struggle? How do we then come to understand happiness? How do we become happy in our queerness, especially when others are unhappy with our queerness.
The Smiling Room Project hopes to film, and collect stories from folks of the queer and trans community to create an arts installation and a photobook. Food, tokens and an honoraria of $20 will be provided.
The main objectives of this project are to: – Explore the dynamics of Queer Happiness & Resistance – Involve a diversity of people at all points of the project – Collect interesting audio interviews – Film dynamic smiles & smiling experiences – Create a beautiful photo book with an essay, donating proceeds to an LGBTQ initiative – Create an immersive video room installation: video, audio, interactive features – Host a warm website to connect people & archive our project – Host an opening reception with participants and community with an artist talk
